Maritime Incident Response Team

We will train you

AVFR proudly operates a Maritime Incident Response Team (MIRT), a specialized team composed of both fire and EMS personnel who undergo additional training to maintain their membership. The team is equipped with three vessels: a 16-foot Sea Ark, a 25-foot Contender, and a 34-foot Silver Ships featuring a 1500 GPM fire pump (In-service fall 2024). These resources enable the team to respond effectively based on the nature of the emergency, whether it involves marine fire suppression, search and rescue, high-water rescue, or other critical incidents.

Under the Port of Virginia Memorandum of Understanding, Abingdon contributes as a regional resource through the POV’s MIRT team. This collaboration extends the team’s operational reach to include the surrounding rivers, Mobjack Bay, and the Chesapeake Bay.

Mission

The mission of AVFR’s Maritime Incident Response Team is to ensure that both residents and visitors of Gloucester County receive prompt and professional assistance in waterborne emergencies. The MIRT is trained to handle a range of incidents, including fire suppression, search and rescue, boater emergencies, high-water rescues, hazardous materials, and dive support.
