Junior Program

We will train you

The Abingdon Fire and Rescue Junior Program immerses young adults in the workings of a fire department through hands-on activities and practical experiences. Participants receive specialized training in Fire Safety, Emergency Response, and Equipment Use, they also gain critical life-saving techniques in EMS (Emergency Medical Services)—training and advanced skills in MIRT (Maritime Incident Response Team) for complex water rescues.

New members can choose between Fire, EMS, or Joint tracks to align their training with their interests. Junior training includes basics such as firefighting techniques, equipment handling, fire safety protocols, basic first aid, and CPR, preparing juniors for both fire and medical emergencies.

Requirements:

To apply for the Abingdon Fire and Rescue Junior Program, prospective members must complete several important steps to ensure a thorough evaluation of their suitability and commitment. The application process includes the following requirements:
  1. Junior Membership Application: Prospective juniors must fill out and submit a detailed membership application form.
  2. Age Requirement: Applicants must be at least 16 years old to qualify for the program.
  3. Letters of Recommendation: Two letters of recommendation are required, and these should come from adult non-family members such as teachers, sports coaches, school principals, pastors, or family friends who can attest to the applicant’s character and suitability for the program.
  4. Personal Essay: A one-page essay is needed, in which the applicant should articulate what they hope to gain from their membership in the program. This essay helps the selection committee understand the applicant’s motivations and goals.
  5. School Endorsement: If the applicant is currently in school, they must provide a letter from a guidance counselor or a parent. This letter should confirm that the applicant will be able to manage the additional responsibilities of the junior program alongside their academic workload.
  6. Parent Meeting: Parents or guardians will be required to meet with the junior membership committee to discuss their child’s involvement in the program and to address any questions or concerns.
  7. Background Check and Medical Form: Applicants will need to undergo a fingerprinting process for background checks. Additionally, a completed medical form, signed by a licensed physician, must be submitted to ensure that the applicant is physically fit for participation in the program.
This comprehensive application process helps ensure that all candidates are well-prepared and committed to making the most of their experience in the Abingdon Fire and Rescue Junior Program.
